“Without a doubt, in Rocafonda, there will always be a ‘Before Lamine and an “After Lamine’.”
Natxo Torne explores Rocafonda, the neighbourhood where Lamine Yamal was born and raised.
RAISED IN ROCAFONDA: IT COULDN’T HAVE HAPPENED ANYWHERE ELSE, SIMPLE AS THAT
Rocafonda is a humble working-class neighbourhood in Mataró, a city on the outskirts of Barcelona.
I studied for one year in Rocafonda and knew many people from El Barrio (the neighbourhood), but I have not been back in recent years but I’d say it hasn’t changed much.
It has a strong character and follows many of the clichés one might imagine—made even more notable after Lamine Yamal.
Nowadays, you realise the importance of Rocafonda, with its mix of good and bad, because it’s clear how this place forged a generational talent like Lamine Yamal. It couldn’t have happened anywhere else, simple as that.
THEY ARE INCREDIBLY PROUD OF LAMINE’S IMPACT
I met Carlos, who works at the bar where Lamine Yamal’s family often goes. He’s a key figure for Lamine. Essentially, Carlos has been preparing all his meals throughout his childhood. So, you could say he’s Lamine’s “sharpener.”
For the neighbours, it was logical and clear that Lamine Yamal would make it—pure street talent. Of course, they are incredibly proud of Lamine’s impact, but Rocafonda knows they need to protect him and his surroundings because no one can even imagine how far Lamine can go in his career.
KEEP THEIR ESSENCE ALIVE
Many of his friends and family still live in the neighbourhood. They’re the kind of people who will never forget where they come from.
They always return to their roots, to the 304 (Rocafonda’s postal code), where it all started, to keep their essence alive.
The local team is CF Rocafonda, and they play very close to where Lamine grew up. I played there many times when I was younger.
It’s the kind of team and away trip where some teammates fake injuries just to avoid the rough experience!
In Catalunya, Barça enjoys the love of the majority. However, in areas like Rocafonda, which has experienced significant internal migration in the past, the vibe is now shaped by huge intercultural influences.
Without a doubt, in Rocafonda, there will always be a “Before Lamine” and an “After Lamine.”
