JAPAN OFFERS AN OPPORTUNITY TO DISCOVER SOMETHING DIFFERENT EVERY DAY

“I still remember that feeling of pure happiness from that experience and the opportunity to be there.”

For Finnish photographer Lauri Haajanen, Japan is a land of contrasts—where ancient traditions coexist with futuristic innovations, and the vibrant energy of its cities is balanced by an underlying sense of calm. Reflecting on his first visit to the country, Haajanen describes Japan’s unique ability to harmonise seemingly opposite forces.

“For me, Japan’s uniqueness lies in its intriguing blend of controlled chaos and tranquillity. In its bustling megacities, life is vibrant, yet the streets are often surprisingly peaceful.

This is largely due to the Japanese people’s ability to function as members of a community and respect shared rules.”

It is this cultural depth that left a profound impression on Haajanen. From the art and architecture to the cuisine and traditional festivals, he was struck by the way history shapes everyday life in Japan.

“Japan’s long history and rich cultural heritage have shaped the nation’s identity and values. This is evident everywhere, from art and architecture to cuisine and traditional festivals. At the same time, Japan is a modern and technologically advanced country where old and new traditions seamlessly blend together. And not to forget about food.”

Capturing the Essence of Japan

As a photographer, Haajanen’s journey through Japan was defined by the incredible sights and moments he encountered. Some locations stood out more than others, leaving a lasting mark on his experience.

“Arashiyama Park viewpoint in Kyoto and Lake Kawaguchiko where we finally got a proper glimpse of Mt. Fuji.”

These moments reinforced Haajanen’s belief that Japan is a neverending source of discovery. With every visit, he finds new landscapes, cultural experiences, and stories to tell.

“There’s something to see and experience around every corner. I’m constantly discovering new places I want to visit. In the future, I’m particularly interested in places off the beaten path and various nature destinations.”

A Memory to Last a Lifetime

Among the many highlights of his trip, one moment stands above the rest. Witnessing Japan’s famous cherry blossoms in full bloom was an experience he will never forget.

“It was my first time in Japan, and we went to Osaka during cherry blossom season. The very first morning, we went to Osaka Castle Park to watch the sunrise and see the cherry blossoms.

I still remember that feeling of pure happiness from that experience and the opportunity to be there.”

Looking Ahead

For Haajanen, this journey to Japan was only the beginning. With an ever-growing list of places to explore, he is eager to delve deeper into the country’s lesser-known destinations, capturing the beauty and complexity of Japan through his lens. Whether it’s the historic streets of Kyoto, the towering presence of Mount Fuji, or the fleeting beauty of cherry blossoms at dawn, his photography tells the story of a country that continues to inspire and amaze.
